About the Project

TasteBud is a modern restaurant point-of-sale system built for dine-in, takeaway, and delivery operations. The platform replaces legacy POS terminals with a tablet-first interface that handles order management, kitchen display routing, table management, inventory tracking, and digital menu presentation.

Designed to work reliably in fast-paced restaurant environments, TasteBud operates offline when internet connectivity drops, syncs seamlessly when reconnected, and integrates with popular delivery platforms and payment processors to unify all order channels into a single system.

Requirements & Objectives

  • Build tablet-optimized order entry interface with modifier support and course management.
  • Implement kitchen display system (KDS) with order routing to appropriate stations.
  • Provide visual table management with status tracking, reservations, and section assignment.
  • Track ingredient-level inventory with automatic deduction on order placement.
  • Support digital menu with photos, descriptions, allergen flags, and real-time availability.
  • Process payments via card terminals, mobile wallets, and cash with split-bill support.
  • Ensure offline operation with automatic data synchronization on reconnection.

The Engineered Solution

1Smart Order Management

Intuitive tablet interface for servers to take orders with modifiers, special instructions, and course timing, routing each item to the correct kitchen station automatically.

2Kitchen Display System

Station-specific order displays with color-coded timing, bump-bar interaction, and audio alerts that replace paper tickets and reduce kitchen errors.

3Table & Floor Management

Visual floor plan with real-time table status, reservation management, waitlist tracking, and section assignment for efficient front-of-house operations.

4Ingredient Inventory Tracker

Recipe-level inventory tracking that automatically deducts ingredients when orders are placed, alerts when items run low, and marks menu items unavailable when stock is depleted.

System Architecture & User Flow

An order placed at the table reaches the kitchen instantly and is tracked through every status to the plate.

Staff read table status at a glance, so seating, turns, and service stay smooth during a rush.

How TasteBud handles a busy service
The kitchen display system routes each item to the right station with color-coded timing and bump-to-complete interaction, replacing paper tickets.
An offline-first architecture using IndexedDB and background sync keeps the system fully operational and syncs automatically on reconnection.
Checks can be divided by seat, item, or custom amount, with multi-payment support across cards, wallets, and cash.

Engineering Process

  • Shadowed restaurant staff to understand order flow from entry through kitchen to payment.
  • Designed tablet-first UI optimized for speed and accuracy in noisy environments.
  • Built order management system with modifier trees and kitchen routing logic.
  • Developed kitchen display system with station-based filtering and timing alerts.
  • Implemented offline-first architecture with IndexedDB and background sync.
  • Integrated with Stripe Terminal for card payments and delivery platform APIs.
  • Conducted live pilot in two restaurant locations before full rollout.
